Geography
Caledonia, is a wide ranging island chain, that starts north of Albion and carries on to the west, it is in reality one huge land mass, yet for nine months of twelve the sea reclaims the low ground, leaving the islands separated. The isles themselves are usually densely forested, with thick evergreens making up the majority of these wilds. That which is not forested is usually mountainous terrain, rich in minerals, and it is from here that the weapons of the Fir Cruthen are made, Caledonian Steel being a byword for durability. Many lochs and rivers crisscross the isles, with plentiful fishing. What rare arable land there is, is used to the full, yet never exhausted, Fir Cruthen villages being semi nomadic in nature.
Caledonia boasts the largest mountain in the Celtic isles- Ben Scuggins, and certainly has more daunting peaks than either Cymrja or Erin.
People
The people of Caledonia have a reputation for breeding warriors, something in the almost antagonistical landscape breeding a ferocity and strength. Those that are not warriors are herders and sailors, naval travel being of paramount importance to reach neighbouring isles. Blacksmiths are common here, and their work highly prized by all within the isles. Politically, Caledonia is feudal, with the Prince bearing the title Laird Thane, and below him or her are the many clans.
The Clans
All Caledonians take pride in their clan, they are all venerable names, with histories and legends to rival the greatest of Kings from other lands. The ruling clan at the moment is the Mac Roth, who have held sway for over a hundred years. Other notable clans include the Mac Verna, the Mac Suibhne- a famed druid clan, the Mac Allister, a bardic clan, MacNulty, Mac Roy, Mac Taggart and Mac Cameron. Infighting between clans is not at all uncommon, indeed looked upon as a natural way to 'blood' untried youths, however the Laird Thane will always intervene to prevent any struggles from becoming too self destructive..
Wildlife
The wildlife on Caledonia is just that, pretty wild. Here are found some of the most disagreeable creatures found anywhere, with the possible exception of the Caledonians themselves. Creatures such as the Highland Shaggy and the Shaoghal Bastard make the life of a farmer perilous indeed- and that is just the farm animals, add Mountain lions, cave bears and the odd wandering Canaris pack, and it is readily apparent why Caledonians are such renowned scrappers- they have to be just to survive. The danger is not limited to just land animals, Both Deep salmon and sturgeon patrol these waters, and 'the one that got away' can just as often refer to the fisherman, as these creatures have a taste for flesh usually limited to sharks. Such horses as are found here are usually sturdy beasts, capable of bearing great weights and traversing difficult terrain.
Major Exports
Trouble (of the claymore wielding variety) , metals, Whiskey, rain, weaponry, armour and warriors.
Places of Note
The two largest structures in Caledonia are the castles- Caer Moncrieff is the largest, on Glasgi island, and this is the home of the Year Kings when they are Caledonian, as such- the current King, Angus Mac Roth dwells here. It is a very sturdy, very defensible castle, large enough to host an entire warband.
The other castle is Caer Bannoch, this castle is similar in design, yet smaller, when the castle at Moncrieff is occupied by a King, then this is the home of the Laird Thane. It is on the island of Firsthome, the original
Island settled by the Celts.
Other towns of note include Neath, a large coastal town in Glasgi, Nulty's Stand- a town of smiths and armourers, within the mountains of Shaoghal, on the site of an ancient hero's fall. Famed Ritual circles on the isles are Lochlann rise, Meredown and Cailleach Dhu.
Associated territories
Under the rulership of the Laird Thane fall two lands, the first is those celts who settled in Northern Albion, in the region known as Norholt. Recent negotiations between King Angus Mac Roth and King Carl Trueheart of the Lions has led to this realm becoming a independent state. Many Celts call this area home, notably the Wolf Clan, a reservoir of some of the finest Fir Cruthen warriors. The land is not ruled by Fir Cruthen or Lion, rather it is a free state, with a Governor, it exists as a sort of Demilitarized zone, a neutral ground for the two peoples. To date this has worked well. The celts from these isles aare ruled by Caledonia's Laird Thane.
The other realm under the Laird Thane's province is the islands now known as the Mu islands, once known as the Floenry isles, they were the scene of a horrific battle between Celts and seafaring buccaneers in 1098, these Buccaneers had exacerbated existing circumstances in Caledonia, causing a famine. During this war the Clan Primogen distinguished themselves nobly, so much so that the then King, Tam Badcrumble Mac Roy named their elder, Hugh De Payne, the infamous Monkfish, as the Duke and ruler of these islands. The name Floenry by now had become a curse on the lips of all other Celts and so to Monkfish fell the duty of rehabilitating these lands, a task which he has done with nobility and efficiency. The islands of Mu now fulfill a valuable role in providing warriors and druids to the warband..
